When Spring weather hits, I pretty much count on rainy days to keep Alex and I indoors from time to time. Now that Eliana has joined our family, it's important for me to be intentional with my plans for our "rained in" days so I can keep both of my children content and entertained.
In my house, there's nothing like a good story to pass the day. If Alex finds a book he really likes, we read it over and over and over again throughout the day. (I love how much he enjoys reading.) So, if I think ahead, I can plan a day's worth of activities to match that story that he favors.
But where can I look to find great books for Alex and Eliana?
Since working in childcare years ago and pursuing a teaching degree, I've learned that the "it" spot for books can be found at the Scholastic website or in their send-home book orders. Beautiful children's books written on every subject and priced very reasonably can be found and there are always new ones being added.
For this event, Alex was sent a box full of books from Scholastic. The titles in this box include:
Pirate Potty – This book comes with a perforated captain's hat and reward stickers - perfect for the little pirate learning to use the potty for the first time! With a helpful, step-by-step story that introduces boys to the concept of toilet training, Pirate Potty is an adventurous lesson that everyone needs to learn.
All of Me! - Few children's book artists can capture the voice and feelings of a young child as well as master painter Molly Bang, the recipient of three Caldecott Honors. In this book, a child is thankful for those things that are most immediate to a youngster--including hands, feet, eyes, and ears.
Hot Rod Hamster - Newbery Honor-author Cynthia Lord and New York Times bestselling illustrator Derek Anderson put the pedal to the medal in this endearing, rhythmic, rip-roaring race to the finish line where a hamster creates a sizzling hot rod with a little help from his new furry friends and YOU!
While the World is Sleeping - Bestselling author and illustrator Pamela Duncan Edwards and illustrator Daniel Kirk take you on a flight across the night to see what happens in nature... while the world is sleeping. Spend the the night on an exploration with foxes, porcupines, raccoons, fish, mice, and more as their day begins while the rest of the world is fast asleep. Fly across the night on a snow owl as you glide over meadows, lakes, forests, and rivers with only the moon to light the way.
Boo Hoo Bird - Perfectly pitched and hilariously imagined, this charming story about a universal experience will put a smile on the face of every child who has suffered a boo-boo and every parent who has struggled to come up with just the right way to give comfort.
Funny Farm - Readers will laugh out loud when Cousin Edward arrives from the city to help out on the farm. The fun is never ending as Edward tries his best to milk the cows, tend the sheep, feed the pigs, plant the garden, and much more. It is truly a day that Edward will never forget!
How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You? - Parents and children can never have enough ways to say "I love you"--and now, America's favorite dinosaurs are giving families a funny book, perfect for bedtime, storytime, anytime. Even when little dinosaurs are naughty, it's important to remind them that no matter what they do, they are always loved. In this book, readers will laugh aloud as parents cope with the typical antics of childhood, but in the end, hugs and kisses show your little one how much you care.
We have read each of these books several times now. I love the different topics, pictures, and discussions that come out of reading each of them. Depending on Alex's mood, he will cycle through these titles and choose his favorite for that time. However, there is one book that stands out from the rest. It doesn't matter the day, the time, or what's going on; if Alex sees me with the book Hot Rod Hamster, he wants to hear the story. And if I read the book to him once, I have to read it at least twice.
Here's a little look at the story and how well Alex knows it.
I'm looking forward to the day that Alex is reading his favorite stories to me. I'm confident that with an online shop like Scholastic, we will have plenty of books for Alex to learn to read with. What is better than watching my little one learn to read while he discovers a love for it?
