Meet Kanani: American Girl's Girl Of The Year {review & giveaway}

When I first told you about the new Girl of the Year from American Girl, Kanani, I was so excited. You see, I had just discussed with the hubster how important it is for us to bring other cultures of dolls into our home for Eliana so she can see the beauty of every skin color and every place on the map. A beautiful doll from Hawaii created by American Girl is the perfect way to start.

There was a buzz in the air the day Kanani arrived to our home. There's just something about getting a brand new doll from American Girl that is so exciting. It takes me back to when I was opening my very own doll, Kirsten, years ago.

Here are some "first impression" shots of Kanani. I took these as she was still in the box.

Did you see her sweet sandals and the pretty flower in her hair? There is no detail left undone when American Girl creates a doll.

I also love this necklace.

As with every American Girl, Kanani comes with a story. The book Aloha Kanani tells the story of when Kanani's cousin comes from New York City to the island of Kaua'i for a visit. During her cousin's stay, Kanani learns about the true Aloha spirit and also learns ho'opono {ho-oh-PO-no} or "to do the right thing".

In her adventures, Kanani helps to save a Hawaiian monk seal cub and because of that, $1 for every plush monk seal sold from American Girl in 2011 {$18 in price} is donated to the National Wildlife Federation {up to $100,000}. This is a wonderful initiative and a great way to teach children to give back and help make a difference.

Now, you don't have to own the doll to get the book. You can find Aloha Kanani and the second book, Good Job Kanani on the American Girl website. While you're there, you'll also find many outfits and accessories for Kanani as well as matching outfits for little girls. If I could choose anything to buy first, though, I would choose Kanani's Lu'au Set. I just love the headwreath, anklets, and lei that come with it. It's the perfect way to share some of the culture of Hawai'i with Eliana.

Here are more detail shots for you. I hope you can see the beauty in detail {flowers, sequins, etc.} and how absolutely stunning Kanani is. Everything from her tan skin to her long hair impresses me and  makes me excited to share this with my daughter.

By the way, Eliana is already saying "Aloha" {Hello, Goodbye, Love, Compassion} when she sees Kanani. We're working on "Mahalo" {thank you} as well.

We love Kanani and know she's found a very good home with us here.

**Please be sure to attend one of the Kanani Events at the American Girl Stores {ages 8 and up} if you get the chance! They all look like so much fun.
