The Tony® Award-winning production will begin performances at the Detroit Opera House on Tuesday, December 15 for a limited holiday season engagement of two weeks through Sunday, December 27.    

NEWSIES, the new American musical, features a Tony® Award-winning score with music by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein and is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, NEWSIES is directed by Tony® nominee Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, who won a 2012 Tony Award® for his work.  The entire creative team has reunited to bring the break-out smash musical to audiences across North America. 

When it opened on March 29, 2012 NEWSIES was intended for a Broadway run of just 101 performances.  The show’s fiercely devoted fans had other ideas, however; they propelled the show to a run of 1005 performances, attendance of more than 1 million and a gross of over $100M. 

While on Broadway, NEWSIES set and broke seven Nederlander Theatre house records and became the highest-grossing show from the 2011-12 Broadway season. The show received 23 major theatrical nominations – including eight Tony Award® nods – and won Tony®, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Score and Choreography.           

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. 

NEWSIES is inspired by the real-life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. 

The stage version introduces seven brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman, including a song written specifically for the tour called ‘Letter from the Refuge,’ while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’ 

Since the film’s 1992 theatrical release and subsequent DVD release, NEWSIES has grown into a cult phenomenon, and for years had been the single most requested title of all the Disney musical films not yet adapted for the stage.  (The film featured a screenplay by Bob Tzudiker & Noni White (Tarzan, 102 Dalmatians).)

The National tour of Sister Act, the broadway musical, has stopped here in Detroit for a few nights. I had the pleasure of sitting in the audience for opening night and I left wishing I could see it all over again.

Sister Act is based on the hit movie but the storyline and soundtrack have been freshened up for the stage - a change I enjoyed. It's still the story of Deloris needing a place to hide from her boyfriend and ending up in a convent where she teaches the nuns how to sing. Yes, the nuns learn to sing and then go on to wow their congregation {as well as their audience}.

This musical is hilarious and heartwarming. There were times when I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe and other times I was smiling as I watched true sisterhood played out before my eyes. The one-liners in this production are SO good and caught me off guard many, many times. Also? Be on the lookout for dance moves that will knock you out of your seat, as the nuns shake their sista' thangs.

From awkward to clumsy, daring to obedient, there's a character in this production for every viewer to relate to. You will love your time taking in all that Sister Act has to offer. And if you're anything like me, you'll be sad to see intermission come so soon and cheer as the 2nd act starts up.

The other night, I had the great privilege of seeing the musical, Porgy and Bess at Detroit Opera House. As a child, I heard some of the songs from the play because my mom would always sing them. As it turns out, the songs were played in her home while she was growing up too.

Porgy and Bess offers its audience a trip back in time to watch a love story between an unlikely pair play out. I was quickly drawn in to the story line and began to cheer on my favorite characters. I found the people I met in this story to be so relatable while I learned not all of them are trustworthy. Audiences with love the "good guys" and hate the "bad guys".

Clara {played by Sumayya Ali} and Jake {played by David Hughey}have perfect chemistry as they share about their life as new parents and Jake's fishing career. These two stood out as a favorite couple to watch during the play, as I'm sure others would agree. I loved laughing and crying with them as a couple.

And there's no way I could leave out Porgy {Nathaniel Stampley}. His is a character that I loved immediately but I grew to love even more when he smiled his big smile and sang "I Got Plenty of Nothing".  He is positively magnetic and will steal your heart.

Last night, my 5 year old son had his first theater experience. I thought THE LION KING, a Disney musical, would be the perfect way to introduce him to the theater arts and it far surpassed my expectations. Our tickets put us on the main floor, center stage. We quickly learned that this was a wonderful place to be sitting.

As The Circle of Life played, we saw the most amazing animals coming down the aisles on either side of us, making their way to the stage. We both found the elephant to be the most impressive and really enjoyed watching all the great, African animals move around on the stage as they celebrated the birth of the lion cub, Simba. This opening score took my breath away and literally brought tears to my eyes. The majesty  of the pride lands matched with the warmth of welcome and a touch of Disney magic was the perfect opening to the incredible story and journey of Simba, his family, and his kingdom.

The costumes in this production are absolutely amazing. There were so many times I found myself watching an animal move only to realize there was a person bringing that animal to life. Many of the costumes are more like life-size or larger than life puppets. The detail in every single piece was not lost on me. I can't even begin to imagine the time, effort, and talent that went into making these things a reality and a true feast for the eyes.

The cast for this production is impressive beyond words but for me the stand-out performances came from Scar {Timothy Carter} and Rafiki {Buyi Zama}. Scar quickly became a character who got to me. He sounded exactly like the Scar I remembered from the Lion King movie I watched when I was younger but he was far more captivating of a character watching him on stage. Timothy Carter set the scene for much of Simba's story in a strong and memorable way. I'm sure audience members will love to hate him as much as I did. And as for Rafiki, hers is a character I couldn't get enough of in a completely different way. She carried with her a presence of wisdom and a feeling of home whenever she was on the stage. I loved her as I do the people who have encouraged me in my own life. {Strange to think I relate people to a baboon but she was really that good and I make that connection in the most loving of ways}.

Whether you have a little one you would like to introduce to the theater arts or you're a grown up who would like to be a kid again, don't miss this production while it's in town. It was a production I didn't just enjoy for a night, I'll keep it in my heart for a lifetime.

In regards to my son, he can't yet pick just one part to be his favorite. He enjoyed his experience and asked me this morning if we can go back and see it again. He's also been singing some of the songs we heard and I'm thinking about buying him the soundtrack.

Performance times for THE LION KING, playing February 13 – March 10, 2013 at the Detroit Opera House, located at 1526 Broadway St., in Detroit, are:

-          Tuesday through Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m.

-          Sunday evening performances at 6:30 p.m. No evening performance on March 10.

-          Saturday matinees at 2:00 p.m.

-          Sunday matinees at 1:00 p.m.

-          Thursday, February 14 matinee at 1:00 p.m.

-          Wednesday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. is Kids Night. Pre-show activities begin at 6:00 p.m.

-          Sunday, February 24 at 6:30 p.m. is a signed performance.
