**I was unable to attend opening night for Mary Poppins in the Fisher Theater last night but I get by with a little help from my friends. I sent a friend in my place with confidence that she would both deliver a review worth reading as well as have an amazing time . Please read on for Andi's review of this amazing, Broadway production.**

There is something magical about seeing a beloved book made into a film. The word for seeing a beloved book AND movie made into a hit Broadway musical would have to be: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! I had the privilege of seeing the Broadway in Detroit production of Mary Poppins last night at the Fisher Theater. To say it was a fabulous night would be an understatement. From the moment the curtain went up until the very last note was played I had a smile on my face.


The entire cast performed phenomenally. Mrs. Brill, the Banks' cook, has always held a special place in my heart. Tregoney Shepherd, who plays Mrs. Brill, did a marvelous job with her character. Her performance caused me to love this character even more. Con O'shea-Creal, was breath taking in the role of Bert. Bert happens to be my other favorite character. Creal brought his own charm to this beloved character. As for Madeline Trumble, playing Mary Poppins, she was practically perfect in every way!

Instead of just providing a setting, the scenery became another character in the show. I loved the paper doll house feel of #17 Cherry Tree Lane and the way it literally opened up before our eyes. The bright chalk painting come to life and the rooftops drew you in to become a part of the magic. Even Mary Poppins' carpet bag performed its role magically.

Choreography and brilliant must be in the same sentence when talking about this show. As a dancer I was in awe of every number. Step in Time, was by far my favorite moment of the whole evening. Tap is what I enjoy most of all dancing. Watching the Chimney Sweeps, Bert and Mary shuffle ball changing and heel toe stepping made me want to either jump on stage to join them or watch this performance again and again. The live orchestra was a treat and I could not ask for a better accompaniment. It was wonderful to hear the classic songs form the movie, along with some new material.

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh present Marry Poppins at the Fisher Theater now through October 28. Thursday, October 25, the Fisher Theater is hosting a “Kids Night on Broadway.” Kids' tickets are specially priced at $9 with the purchase of an adult ticket. There will be pre-show and post-show activities, FREE popcorn, FREE ice cream and more! What a fantastic way to introduce your children to fine arts. I'll leave some surprises for you, but if you get the chance to go and see this production jump at that chance!

The hubster and I had the distinct pleasure of attending a performance of Mary Poppins at the Detroit Opera House last night. We arrived just before the curtain went up and were escorted to our seats by the usher. As I stared at the curtain which said "Mary Poppins", I felt the anticipation rise up inside of me. I knew I was about to witness something magical.

Mary Poppins {the stage production} is taken from the script and score of the ever popular Disney movie mixed with the series of Mary Poppins books written by P.L. Traverse. The process of creating such a tremendous production was a time consuming one, but Cameron Mackintosh believed in the idea and wanted to see it through to fruition. He did this so very well and the production itself is a "knock your socks off" result of that effort.

As each song was performed in this musical play, I was awed by the talent on the stage. The vocals and choreography were astonishing on their own. Add to those, the magical and beautiful set of each scene, and I found myself drawn into the story in a way that a child is drawn into imaginative play. The performances were pristine and I felt as each one was good enough to be a grand finale. In short, I was wowed.

Let's chat about the show's star, Caroline Sheen {Mary Poppins} for a moment. She has some pretty big shoes to fill {Julie Andrews, anyone?} but she wears them so well. When I pondered what I thought of her performance compared to the character I loved in the Disney film, I concluded that Caroline must be a blood relative of the original Mary Poppins. Her performance was so on point and I loved her just as much as I love the character I grew up with. She was more than believable, she was entrancing.

The magic of this show is more than a song and dance. It's the lessons shared that warm the heart and allow viewers to take a bit of Mary Poppins home with them. There is something for everyone with a focus on the heart of the family and seeing the hearts of those we see every day while appreciating their beauty. As I tapped my toes to each tune and enjoyed every dance routine, my heart was touched and I was moved to tears as I watched the characters learn why Mary Poppins chose to come to their home.

Engaging, delightful, captivating, moving; these are the words I use to describe this amazing event.

If you get the chance, you must see this play. Take your family and friends and enjoy their company, but open your heart as the curtain rises. You won't regret it.

Did you know I'm a big fan of musical productions? There's something about the magic of theater that I just adore. Each time I'm able to see an off-Broadway play, I look forward to losing myself in the story line and soaking in every second of the performance. 

Now, there are many productions that come through Detroit and I don't get to see every one that stops here. However, this December I'm looking forward to an amazing show. I'm going to see Mary Poppins! (This is a story I know well as I watched the movie countless times when I was little.)
