You know...

Since it was Christmas...

Mikayla's very first Christmas and our first Christmas in our new home...

We wanted some pictures for memory's sake.

And we have our fill of *ahem* memorable photos.

Nice belly, kid. Eliana? Mikayla? Over here!

AGAIN with the belly...I'm still OVER HERE, guys. Nice work, Mik.

Oh, boy...let's just try a group shot and move on...

LOL...Yep! That's my family.

I hope your holidays were great and your New Year is off to a wonderful start. We're already crazy busy with schedules and having our roof finished.  Oh, the joys of owning a home. We've had to get rid of a mouse and put on a new roof and we just moved in before Thanksgiving. Not to mention, the painting and such that had to happen before we could even move.

ANYway, I hope to be sharing some photos of the home once we're a bit more settled. :) Until then...

I'm a terrible mom and I've barely gotten through the photos taken at Eliana's 2nd birthday. ANYWAY, This is a photo of the big girl next to the cake I made for her. Sorry for the poor quality. The cake had 3 layers and the top layer was a little purse. :) She loved it!

(so much for "wordless")

My family and I did a lot over the past weekend. One of my highlights was visiting the butterfly garden on Mackinac Island, MI and making a new friend.

This was the first of 4 butterflies to land on me while I was there. I guess I'm all set in the "good luck" department.

On Saturday, my family headed to a BBQ with friends and had an amazing time. While we were there, a huge thunderstorm swept through and left the sky looking like this.

And while that was cool, the photographer in me was most excited for unique lighting the sky gave for pictures like this.

I hope your weekend was enjoyable as well!

I was just able to purchase a new lens for my Canon DSLR to use at camp this year. I'll be doing photography for a week and it will come in handy for photographing activities like technical tree climbing and the mud walk. *So excited!*

Of course, I have to practice using it right away and enjoyed trying it out on a rainy day. Here are some favorite "rainy day" shots.

I tried an impromptu,  Easter themed photo shoot with Eliana and Alex today. I took their photos one at a time and then together.

Eliana...

First she gave me the "You bore me" pose.

And then she gave me the "I can't hear you".

Happy Easter? ;)

It may seem far off for some, but for me, my thoughts and prayers always land in July. Before that month, I have plenty else to think about and pray for and plenty else I'm involved in {believe me}...I just always land in July.

Like past summers, I'm volunteering at the Champions For Life Kids Camp with Vision Hope. I love this camp and all it does for the foster children of my area. More than the camp, though, I love the kids. I love them so much I think about them nonstop when I'm not at camp. Truly, my heart is sold out to this camp and all the children who pass through.

This year is a little different for me. Every year I've gone, I've been a "Camper Buddy" {a counselor}. I've been assigned one or two girls to spend the week with and make sure their memories of camp are wonderful. I never thought I'd take a side-step from that role. Ever. I just love getting to know one of the children personally and really speaking into her life.

I guess God had bigger shoes for me to wear this year. Before I knew it, I was sitting at a Panera Bread with one of the Camp Directors and chatting about my role at camp this year. And after our chat, it seems I have more than clothes and toiletries to pack. I'll also be packing up my camera, laptop with photo editing software, and other photography equipment. Yes. This year, for one week, I'll be the camp photographer.

Can I tell you how BIG this is? No, I don't mean that this is big as in "check me out". I mean this is big as in "I'm willing but I'm totally going to be relying on your help, God". My job is to capture memories for each and every child at camp. {Yes, I'll have help.} About 70 children doing many activities daily and many of them for the very first time. God knows I love to take photos and He knows I love the kids at camp. I guess that's why He knew I wouldn't say "No" when He asked.

Admittedly, it's going to be hard to watch the Camper Buddies with their campers and know that I'm missing that one-on-one time with someone. But the true gift? I get a chance to encounter every single child who is attending camp. Wow. I will see how each of them arrive and will see how each of them leave a little changed. That's amazing stuff.

Now, I'm very excited for this opportunity to stretch my wings a bit and do something new but can I ask a favor of you? Would you please pray that God would help my hands and heart prepare for this? I have a lot of organizing to do and a lot of faith to practice. I'm also in need of a few extra things to add to my equipment but I know God can and will provide that. I could really use a new lens with a little more "zoom" than I have, a nice flash that doesn't pop-up, and a few smaller things. God is so able to provide these but I still covet your prayers for my peace of mind.

Thanks!  I'll try and keep you posted as I get closer to "go time". I'm SOOO SOOO excited!!!!!

I mentioned yesterday how I met Shannon {from Family Brings Joy} at Blissdom. Yes, she was great to hang out with but I found myself with major camera envy as I saw her snapping excellent photo after excellent photo of Michelle Branch and Matt Kearney. {Our entertainment one evening.} I have a nice Canon DSLR, but I chose to not bring it to Blissdom. What was I thinking? I don't know.

Anyway, I noticed that Shannon was one of those people who have a lovely camera and know how to use it. {I secretly snarl at people with a nice camera who have no idea what they're doing. Shannon is much nicer than I am, though. I'm sure she doesn't snarl at anyone.} I asked her to stop by and share with you {and me} some of her background and experience with photography along with any tips she has to offer.

Here's what she has to say on the subject.

PHOTOGRAPHY

My love of photography began at an early age and was nurtured through my parents’ love of photography as well.

This photo was taken of me (2) by my Father. He had a darkroom where he developed many photos of his young family.

I think this is what my very first camera looked like:

What I’ve Learned
  • TURN OFF YOUR FLASH
As long as it is not dark, otherwise you will have “shiny” spots on people’s faces.
  • Read your camera’s manual
You don’t have to read it cover to cover in one sitting…completely daunting task, for sure! If you don’t understand what it is saying, google it. I have found many video tutorials, blogs and resources to help you understand the photography jargon.
  • Don’t be afraid to get close. My favorite photographs are close up shots. I use my telephoto lens the most.
My oldest Daughter

What I Love
  • Photography captures a moment in time, how incredibly cool is that! It is quite miraculous, actually.
  • To display photography in my home, both mine and professionals. Photography is my favorite way to decorate my home.
In my home
  • Looking at albums of photos with my family…remembering special times with them.
  • Family Portraits…worth every penny.
  • Finding photos of ancestors who I never had the opportunity to meet.

Photo of my great, great Grandparents’ family

  • Tweaking digital photos with digital software or websites. My favorite effects or actions are Cross Process, Orton-ish, CinemaScope, Sepia and Soften.

What Inspires Me
  • My family and friends are my usual ‘suspects’ when shooting my camera. They are my inspiration. I want to capture their essence…the beauty of who they are.

I took this of my Best Friend’s 2 daughters at the birth of her third child. I love the emotions shown.
  • Other photographers!
  • My Creator inspires me. His love for me is abundant in all the beauty around me.
  • Attending photography workshops and classes.

Here is a photo of Amy & I at Blissdom Blog Conference. (slightly unfocused, my camera was acting up)
It is a HUGE honor to write this guest post for Amy. Thank you so much for having me
Notes: I am not a professional photographer. Photography is a passion of mine. I have not been given any form of monetary gains for writing this post.

Time again to join Kailani at An Island Life for the simple question/answer meme, "Aloha Friday". This is a fun way to kick off the weekend and meet a few new bloggers at the same time!

My Question:

{OK, everyone! This is your chance to put your wishes out where they can be seen. Bookmark this and leave it open if you need to send your loved one a big fat hint.}

What is one thing you'd love to receive for Valentine's Day? {Yes, even if you don't celebrate it. Pretending can be fun sometimes. ;) }

My Answer:
A new lens for my Canon DSLR. *cough* it's on my Amazon wish list *cough*

LOL

Have a great weekend!

It's time to get your Aloha on with Kailani of An Island Life. For today's linky and rules on how to play, click the link.

Basically, Aloha Friday is a simple question/answer meme. I ask a question, I answer said question, and then you answer it in the comments.

Ready...Set...Go!

Today's question is:

What do you want to be when you grow up? {We all have dreams, don't we?}

My Answer:

At 30 years young, I dream of being a photographer. By photographer, I don't necessarily mean I want to own a studio and do family portraits {although, I never say "never"}. Rather, I dream of traveling back roads and unbeaten paths in pursuit of landscapes, sunsets, and other beautiful things in the great outdoors to photograph.

While the weather was in our favor {probably for the last time of the year}, we decided to head out to the cider mill as a family. We enjoyed fresh air, cider and donuts {of course}, and a walk in the woods. :)

I just love this boy and I'm lucky he's so patient with me and my camera.

Eliana's pigtails got squashed down by her hat but they're still cute.

This year was a fun one for Halloween. We visited my in-laws after nap time. There, the kiddos received Halloween treats and small gifts to get their night off to a good start.

After that, we headed to my parent's church for their Harvest Fest. Alex played games while Eliana played with me. At the end of the night, we left with a lot of candy. Alex gets a little bit here and there and the hubster and I are happy to help polish off the rest. ;)

Alex was Woody the Cowboy. He loves asking to see his picture after it's taken. :)

Eliana is an autumn fairy who loved to play with leaves and acorns.

As you know, Eliana turned one year old last week. We had her party on Sunday and I wanted to share just a few pictures from her big day.

Alex cut out everything on Eliana's cake and told me where he wanted them. He also helped me mix up the cake! He was so proud of himself. :)

Happy Birthday, baby.

She was SO neat and meticulous with how she ate her cake. Alex was the exact opposite of this on his first b-day.
