On the 4th, Alex turned 4.

I made his "John Deere" cake for him. {Pssst. The hill is supposed to be a "big rock candy mountain". Alex requested this}

On the 9th, the hubster turned 30. We threw him a surprise party and one of the highlights was a jam session with some friends we used to play gigs with {waaaaaay back in the day}. Eliana helped. :)

Today...
Ugh, let me just be honest. Today stunk!

I woke up with Alex around 7:30 this morning and knew I was in for it then. My head was pounding and I felt pressure from my left temple to my right and behind my eyes as well.

Migraine. Hmph!

I tried to get myself going so I could take care of it. You know, nip it in the bud. My head had other plans for me, though. After both kiddos were awake, I came to the realization that there would be no mercy with this particular migraine. I felt weak and nauseous and decided to Skype the hubster to ask for back-up.

A few minutes after my Skype message, he called me up and said he was on his way home. I made sure the littles were fed and settled and then took to laying on the floor with some pillows. Alex and Eliana both knew something wasn't quite right with me. My sweet girl even came over to sit next to me and smile. {I'm pretty sure she's going to be working in some sort of care giving job when she grows up. She just loves to take care of people and can't stand to see anyone uncomfortable.}

Finally, the hubster was home and I was off to bed.

I wish that was the end of it. I wish a little rest would have been helpful enough to get rid of the migraine.

I woke up around 12 and wanted to take some Excedrin. No go. I took one pill and got sick. I began crying and my body couldn't hold it's own weight. My pain level was at a 10. I was shaking and seriously sick. The hubster helped me out and got me back to bed.

I woke up again and thought it was around 1. Boy, was I wrong. It was 4:30. At this point, I hadn't had anything to eat or drink since breakfast and I was beginning to feel it. I'm hypoglycemic. Not eating is like begging for trouble. My pain level was still high but it was around an 8 vs. the 10 I felt earlier. I was hopeful. Maybe with more rest I'd be better soon.

The hubster began to get concerned and was asking me to try and eat something. I had ice chips and a few sips of water without feeling sick so I thought about it. I was too weak to chew and I couldn't hold up my head either. Honestly, I was really getting worried but was hopeful.

We decided on applesauce and I had maybe 3 spoonfuls. Um....bad idea. And that brought the hubster to a decision. Is there something he can do to help or should he call his parents to sit with the kids while he takes me to the hospital? I thought I would end up in the hospital too.

Around 7pm or so he brought me Excedrin and water and asked me to try again. I took it and prayed like crazy. My prayer sounded like this, "God, please help this medication stay down. And if I get sick, please give me 20 minutes so the medication can begin to get into my blood". I guess the hubster was praying the same thing. Luckily, I was able to stay still enough to not upset my stomach and I fell asleep with an icepack on my head. When I woke up, I finally felt like my migraine was letting up. I was out of bed in time to sit with Alex for a few minutes and then take him to bed.

I tearfully thanked the hubster for helping out as much as he did. He left his job to take over mine and took care of me at the same time. I was in pretty bad shape and spent a lot of time crying about how miserable I was while he did nothing but comfort me and do whatever he could to help.

I hate the fact that I get migraines but I love that my hubster is so good to me and takes such good care of me.

*sigh* I'm going to get back to eating my chicken noodle soup. I just thought I'd brag on my hubster for a moment and write a "THANK GOODNESS THIS MIGRAINE IS FINALLY GONE" post.  :)

The other day, the hubster and Alex were playing with a remote control car. Obviously, Alex didn't want to have that play time interrupted. Check out the following conversation.

  • Alex:      Dear God, Thank you for taking the poop away from my belly. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
  • Hubster:      Buddy? Do you need to go poop?
  • A:      No, Dad. I asked God to take it away. I'm much better now.
  • H:      Buddy, if you have to go, we can pause this and come back.
  • A:      God took the poop away, Daddy. Can He do that?
  • H:      Alex, let's just go potty really quick.
  • A:      No. Jesus doesn't want me to go poop.
  • H:      You know what? I'm pretty sure Jesus wants you to go poop. God made our bodies to poop. You probably don't believe that, do you?
  • A:      No. I don't have to poop, Daddy. Can we drive the car?

Yes, this really happened. While their conversation went on, I was cracking up non-stop. Alex must have a different understanding about how prayers work. lol

What can I say? Leave it to the kids to keep you young. ;)

This post has nothing to do with pirates or with people walking the plank.

Nope.

It's just me thinking I'm clever.
This post IS about the plank, though. You know. The plank exercise.

Here. Let me show you right quick.

There you have it. THAT is the plank. You hold that position for 30 seconds and it helps to strengthen your core muscles.

This is something that's on the Wii Fit that I've been working out with.

As I was working out today, the hubster says, "You want to really work your abs? Try "the plank". That's a good one."

Now, if you don't know, I'm kind of competitive. *GASP* I am. I try to keep up with my skinny husband in the skinny department but to do that, I need to keep up with him in the "fit" department. SO, when he tosses a "challenge" at me by "suggesting" an exercise, I have to accept and give it my all.

Well, I did that thar plank exercise. It was the last thing I did before I turned off the Wii for the day. And do you know what? I DID it! I BEAT HIM!

When the scores came up on the scoreboard after I had finished, my score was 83/100. And his? Yup. It was 69/100.

Yippee! I can do something better! (I totally earned bragging rights. Right?)

LOL

OK. On with my day.

image from Eco Joe's

The other day, I went on a "change the room" rampage. I moved things around and made my dining room a tad bit different than it was before. THEN, I spent time cleaning up the counter in the kitchen. I put everything away and wiped down the counter top. (I tend to clean SUPER thoroughly when I'm stressed or need a break from the craziness that can sometimes come from simply being a mom.)

Anywho, the hubster gets home and sees one of Alex's toys on the floor. He picks it up, puts it on the counter in the kitchen, and walks away. Inside my mind I heard a low "grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" sound that threatened to come out of my mouth. Instead, I said "I just cleaned that off and you're going to put Alex's toy there?"

Well, I won't quote the hubster here and tell you what he said but I can tell you that it was kind of whiny. It was. Seriously.

I prodded a bit to find out what the prob was and it came out. "There's no room for our things. It's not your fault. Our home is just too small."

HA!
HA HA!
Oh....................HA!

Can I tell you? The hubster has ALWAYS graciously acknowleged that living in our small living space must be difficult for me as a mom of 2. Trying to find room for the kids, let alone their toys can be quite a challenge sometimes. I do my best to find a home for everything. HOWEVER, I've never heard him admit that our home is too small let alone whine about it.

Oh, I wanted to bust a gut with MAD laughter while flashing lights illuminate the sign over my head that says, "This is what I've been trying to tell you!!!! DING DING DING"

LOL

Now, to be fair, there's very little we can do about this right now. Pair our mortgage with this bad economy and you've got one stuck family. I've been praying that God would send us an answer (if there is one) and trying to make due for now.

...It's just funny that it only took him 10 days of being home on vacation with a cold and nowhere to go to learn of what I deal with every single day.

Dear God,
Well, I guess you know the rest. We just need a tiny bit more room, please.
Amen.

All over the map this year. I experienced so many emotions in one day and I’m afraid to look in the mirror to count the gray hairs that have sprung up.

First, there was pure excitement and happiness as my little family sat around the tree to open presents. Alex was the star of the show and opened gift after gift. (He even opened Eliana’s gifts for her). I loved seeing his little face light up and hearing him say things like, “Oh, wow! This is my cool Buzz Righthear” (or Lightyear if you don't speak toddlereese). We had a wonderful time together.

Then, we drove to my parent’s home for breakfast in the pouring rain. We had a nice visit over there, opened some gifts, ate yummy food, and spent some time catching up with my little brother who was home from college.

After breakfast, we headed back home to catch some rest before Christmas dinner at my in-law’s and this is where the day gets hairy. Alex, who was buzzed up on Christmas cheer refused to take a nap. The hubster and I were plumb tuckered and really wanted him to rest so we could. Hmph!

I received a phone call from my mom around this time. My poor sister had to part ways with her cat ON CHRISTMAS due to an injury that would cost an insane amount of money to fix. Needless to say, she was a wreck and was not wanting the “Merry Christmas” calls for the day.  Hmph again!

During Christmas dinner at my in-law’s, Alex began to choke on a strawberry. I’m not talking about a little *cough, cough* kind of choke. I’m talking about SERIOUS choking. I yelled something like, “Heimlich! Seriously!” to the hubster. He jumped out of his seat and grabbed Alex trying to do anything to help him. I looked in Alex’s mouth, found a whole, frozen strawberry, swept it out with my finger, and wanted to fall apart. Instead, I held Alex close, thanked God that he was alright, and tried to remain calm so Alex would be confident that he was OK.

*sigh*

So, there is the story of my crazy, up & down day. Overall, we have a lot of great memories of Eliana’s first Christmas with our family. And, beyond the gifts we received, we made sure to keep the real reason for Christmas in the forefront of our minds and hearts. I’m just happy we didn’t rely on the day itself to bring us any measure of happiness. You know what I mean?

5 years ago this month, my husband started treatments to help battle the cancer that was spreading in his body.

It all started in the Spring of 2004 when a cancerous tumor was found that needed to be removed immediately. He went into surgery to have that taken out. The doctors kept a close eye on his blood tests and scans only to find that the cancer had spread to his lungs months later.

*How could this be happening? He had just turned 21 years old. It didn’t seem right at all.*

I should mention that the first tumor was found right after the hubster and I had moved in together. I thought God was punishing us but I know better than that now. In any case, this was something that would either bring us together or tear us apart.

When we learned that the cancer had spread, we went from doctor to doctor to get opinions on how to treat it. Luckily, we found a great cancer center at the University of Michigan Hospital and it was decided that he would face chemo and radiation.

The day that decision was made was the worst and best day of my life. I was working when he called to tell me what he had decided and when his treatments would start. I cried all day at work and went home to hug him after the work day was through.

Right when I got home, the hubster asked me to marry him and told me that he didn’t want to go through treatments if he couldn’t spend the rest of his life with me when it was over. ( I said “Yes”, of course.)

So, he went through his treatments. I watched him get very, very sick and cared for him the best I could. I watched his hair fall out and saw him get more thin than I had ever thought possible. Through it all, though, I saw him keep his chin up and stay positive. This inspired me to no end. How can you be so weak and sick and still care more about the people around you than you do about yourself?

His positive attitude got him through his treatments and the treatments worked their magic. Now, he gets to celebrate being 5 years away from when he started his treatments.

This experience not only brought the two of us together, but it taught us about God’s grace and how even the darkest of situations can be used to help us grow in character and faith.

You see, the great miracle here comes after the surgery and the treatments. The doctors told us that children may be impossible as he could very well be sterile from the treatments. They also warned that if we did conceive a child, he/she could have some sort of deformity due to the chemicals that may still be in his bloodstream from treatments. On my side of the world, I had my doctor telling me that children may be impossible due to the ovarian cysts I was continuously getting and the endometriosis I had.  It didn’t look like we should even attempt to have a family of our own.

Still, the hubster and I believed that there was a child that God had for us. After we were married not even a full year, we decided to try and conceive a child. I found out I was already pregnant with Alex the very month we were going to begin tracking my ovulation. God had a plan for us and look at us now. We’re the parents of 2 children (one who will make her appearance very soon) and we know that they are both blessings and both miracles. There is not a day that we don’t thank God for choosing us to be parents.

**Here’s to 5 years of being cancer free, love! I look forward to the many, many years we have left together and watching our family grow. You inspire me and have taught me so much about being a stronger person and how to lean on God when I can’t be strong any longer. I love you!*
