How often do you follow those little nudges during your day? Would you believe me if I said those little nudges led me to our soon to be home?

We had all but given up on finding a house for ourselves. If you've been around the blog for a beat, you may have read about the many times we were told "NO" on the homes we were trying to get into. The market in our area is nuts and the best homes go the fastest. Our only strategy was to get out of the rat race, focus on homeschooling the kiddos, and pick up the search again come the winter {hoping that the competition that time of year would be less}.

Early in August, the hubster had to spend a week in New Orleans working for a client. There was no way I was going to spend a week alone with the 3 kiddos cooped up in our condo, so we went to stay with my in-laws. The Monday before Mike was to return, his mom told me to take the day and go do something alone and leave the kiddos with her and my father-in-law.

I thought about what I should do. Where should I go?

Then a tug in my heart made me want to go "home"...back to the city I grew up in and also spent a lot of time with the hubster in when we were dating. Luckily, "home" was only a 15 minute drive south from where I was staying, so I headed off. As I was driving, though, I asked God to guide me that day...as I always do...I asked him to help me not miss opportunities to share His goodness with people as I go about my day.

My first stop was the Habitat for Humanity ReStore where I found a chair I fell in love with. It had old-time charm to it but needed to be recovered {still does}. I called my mom and asked her if she thought it was do-able and she let me know she was home so I could just stop by with it after I bought it. Oh, and by the way, "There are wicker chairs on the curb across the street but I don't want to go get them until the people there are gone". She told me.

I bought the chair and headed for my parent's house and spotted the wicker chairs...and the people...across the street and something told me to just go ask for them.

I pulled up to the corner, asking the woman there if she would mind. That one question led to her deciding to share her present-tense life with me. Her sister owned that house and she just passed away 2 weeks prior to our conversation. She let me know she would be selling the house and had to get rid of everything inside of it. She also let me know how upset and stressed out she was, now caring for her 16 year old niece who has special needs. But before I left that chat, I asked her if it were OK that I pray for her. Her face became so relieved. She sighed a great big sigh. "Yes! PLEASE pray for me. I've really got my work cut out for me here."

I had her name and phone number written on a napkin. She told me to call her in a couple weeks if I were interested in buying the house. She was going to have someone give her an estimate of value and contact an agent to sell it.

Well, some time went by and the hubster and I agreed we could at least find out what she was going to ask for it. And I kept meaning to call her, I just kept getting sidetracked for whatever reason. Finally, a day and time came when the kiddos were calm and content and I felt a strong urge to call her right then. I called and she told me I had great timing. She had an asking price and an agent ready to list the house for sale. She also said she would show us the house that night.

We looked at the house and were blown away. For me, I remembered spending time there and in that yard as a little girl. But looking at the home as a mom of three little ones, I saw SO much potential for the space and knew our family could be quite comfortable there. After our walk through, we had a chat with the woman about our intentions. "If you're interested, the agent won't even list the house." We were told. And that didn't really hit me right away because I wanted to make sure she knew I had been praying for her every day like I told her I would.

I squeezed her hand and told her she was in my prayers from the day I met her. At first she tried to joke and laugh it off. I looked her in the eye and said "I mean it. I want you to know you're being prayed for." Her eyes welled up with tears and she said a quick "Goodbye", giving us the card of her agent so we could call him the following day if we decided to make an offer.

Well, we made an offer and the house never hit the market. No one knew it was available which means no one could outbid us or beat us to it. Our offer was accepted and we close in just under 2 weeks.

My friends, I truly, truly believe that this opportunity could only have been orchestrated by God Himself. Who else could set up so many "by chance" happenings and bring us such a beautiful outcome?

Do you listen to those "nudges", those "gut instincts"? Simple obedience could make all the difference.

Oh, I could go on and on about this house but we've plenty of time for that as I'll be sharing about our projects as we go along. I'll let you know the key items that I love about it, though. *It's a Victorian home. *It has a very large backyard {with plenty of room for a garden!}. *There's an old barn in the backyard. I LOVE IT!

There are many things going on around me today. And through it all, I've reached a place where I can lift my eyes and say, "Yes. God is good".

I don't say that in a easy kind of way. I don't say it as if to put a bandage on the latest wound; a way to cover up a vulnerable place. I say that because I know in my heart of hearts that it's true.

God is so good.

In every "No" there is a different kind of "Yes".

In every trial, there is a blessing, there is a lesson learned.

In every prayer offered up, there is an answer...even if that answer is silence. Because in that silence, is movement. In that movement, is God's hand. In God's hand, is a perfect peace.

But I won't find that peace if I don't trust Him. I won't see it if I try to put my answer and my ideas in the place of that peace. Myself and my ways will never fit inside the shape of His perfection.

In a way, knowing this makes life a bit easier. It takes the pressure off my own shoulders. If I can learn to hear His voice and follow His leading, I will be able to more easily navigate my way through life. More importantly, it will help me as an example to my little ones.

My kiddos ask questions all the time about things like, "Why didn't we get this house either?". It's a valid question. And while I could go into deep explanation of the housing market and how quickly things are moving, I find it more important to say, "You just watch, sweetie, God will bring us the perfect home." Through my example, they're learning to wait on God with a smile on their faces. They're learning that there are things more important than "things". They are learning faith, and patience, and prayer...and patience.

Romans 8:28 ~ And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

In our hunt for a house, I am growing and learning so many things. I guess that's why every time we try to turn in an offer on a house and hear, "That house is already under contract", I'm disappointed but not knocked down. Really, we've been through this over and over again. The market is crazy right now and homes are selling left and right. We've gone as quickly as we can with our offers but most of our disappointing news comes literally overnight.

The hubster and I have been doing well with building each other up and encouraging each other through this process. I've learned to trust and follow his leadership more than I have in the past as well. I tend to be pretty stubborn and independent with big decisions. I know what I want and I go after it. Presently, though, I'm learning to let go of the "me" stuff and see things from my husband's perspective as well as my own.

About a month ago, my husband asked that we take a day off from our searching and stalking websites to be in intentional prayer instead. I did as he requested and I was so encouraged by a scripture I read that day. Matthew 7:7-11 says,
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.  Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!".

I was so encouraged by this scripture. It was as if I was given permission to ask God to help us find a house. And of course I can ask Him about everything, but I felt unworthy of something as great as a house. After this day in prayer, though, I held on to the verse that said, "Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?". As a mom, I completely understand that. If my children ask me for something to eat, I'm not going to head outside and grab a handful of gravel. Instead, I'm going to give them something good.

Yesterday, though, this idea came full circle for me. I had been holding on to that scripture but still getting answers of "Not this house" in our hunt. Oh, how frustrating that was for me. Then, our guest speaker at church gave me a brand new perspective and I finally "get it".

He shared from Matthew 15:21-28. The passage is about a Canaanite woman who comes to Jesus asking Him for healing for her daughter. Her faith is tested during their exchange to the point where Jesus not only tells her "No", but He says to her, "It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs". You or I may get offended at a statement like that but allow me to shed some light on it. The word used for dog in Greek is translated to "puppy". It was typical of families to take in puppies to care for until they were mature and then they were let go again. A puppy in the house would often eat crumbs and scraps that fall beneath the table just as they do today.

The woman responds to Jesus by saying, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table". This is where she shows an understanding of her faith...and where I finally understood something, myself. Just a crumb of God's grace is enough to do a miracle.

You see, I had been holding on to the first passage of scripture. I would pray "God, I know if I ask you for bread you won't give me a stone. I can ask you for a house and know you won't give me something that doesn't meet the needs of my family." If I can be honest, though, I began to ask Him for too much. I looked for nicer and bigger homes. I wanted to move to a "nicer" area. In short, I was asking for a big, fat loaf of bread when I shouldn't be so proud as to ask for more than a crumb.

Ouch.

It really sunk in when I was reading information that came to me about our sponsor child last night. She's only 12 and has so many responsibilities...and lives with far less than I have. Shame on me to look for a BIG house with all the bells and whistles. Shame on me to want to own something I can take pride in to the extent of "look at what I have". No. God will provide a home for us...I believe that with all my heart. However, He's not in the business of building up my kingdom. The house we will buy will be a home that brings glory to God. It will be a testimony to His faithfulness and a place where we will raise our family to walk in His ways.

How could I properly teach my children about God's grace and provision if I continued to act so spoiled?

I now understand that I can ask Him for our next home...but I must come humbly and willing to shut myself down so I can focus on what it is God would have for my family.

Not my will, but HIS be done.

I have this quirky thing about me. I watch people's behavior and I wonder why they are the way they are. I don't mean in a judging kind of way, either. It's sincere. I'm a big believer that whatever surface behaviors I see are just the symptoms of something deeper, something unspoken many times. It's the things unseen that I wish I knew so I could be of some help some way.

Because of my own past, I'm very sensitive to this sort of thing and I often find my heart broken for other women who just don't know a better way or who can't find it within themselves to believe in themselves. Knowing I can't fix it or eliminate it, I choose to pray and say what I can {if the opportunity presents itself} in a loving way.

One thing that truly, truly breaks my heart is when I see a lady, a sister, a woman, trying to put on someone else's skin. She will admire someone so greatly that she literally tries to become her and/or outdo her.  There is NOTHING WRONG with who you are. There is no need to try and become someone you can never be.  That's true for friends, family, movie stars, you name it. You can only be who you are.

In a class I took recently, our teacher {and a wonderful woman, I might add} said,

"God doesn't make junk. He doesn't. When He looks at you, there is a banner over your head that says, 'You are loved. You are loved. You are loved!'".
How true those words are. We need to get it from our heads into our hearts.

Ladies, YOU ARE LOVED...just as you are...You are a treasure.

As you face the rest of your day, pick your chin up a little bit. Know that you're amazing, and beautiful, and perfect just as you are.

Happy Spring Forward! *just a friendly reminder*

This week's House Blend is from MaxLucado.com. The message is simple and powerful. Enjoy!

The Living Room:
When Your Heart Needs a Father

by Max Lucado
"Our Father who is in heaven …” With these words Jesus escorts us into the Great House of God. Shall we follow him? There is so much to see. Every room reveals his heart, every stop will soothe your soul. And no room is as essential as this one we enter first. Walk behind him as he leads us into God’s living room.
Sit in the chair that was made for you and warm your hands by the fire which never fades. Take time to look at the framed photos and find yours. Be sure to pick up the scrapbook and find the story of your life. But please, before any of that, stand at the mantle and study the painting which hangs above it.
Your Father treasures the portrait. He has hung it where all can see.
Stand before it a thousand times and each gaze is as fresh as the first. Let a million look at the canvas and each one will see himself. And each will be right.
Captured in the portrait is a tender scene of a father and a son. Behind them is a great house on a hill. Beneath their feet is a narrow path. Down from the house the father has run. Up the trail the son has trudged. The two have met, here, at the gate.
We can’t see the face of the son; it’s buried in the chest of his father. No, we can’t see his face, but we can see his tattered robe and stringy hair. We can see the mud on the back of his legs, the filth on his shoulders and the empty purse on the ground. At one time the purse was full of money. At one time the boy was full of pride. But that was a dozen taverns ago. Now both the purse and the pride are depleted. The prodigal offers no gift or explanation. All he offers is the smell of pigs and a rehearsed apology: “Father, I have sinned against God and done wrong to you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son” (Luke 15:21).
He feels unworthy of his birthright. “Demote me. Punish me. Take my name off the mailbox and my initials off the family tree. I am willing to give up my place at your table.” The boy is content to be a hired hand. There is only one problem. Though the boy is willing to stop being a son, the father is not willing to stop being a father.
Though we can’t see the boy’s face in the painting, we can’t miss the father’s. Look at the tears glistening on the leathered cheeks, the smile shining through the silver beard. One arm holds the boy up so he won’t fall, the other holds the boy close so he won’t doubt.
“Hurry!” he shouts. “Bring the best clothes and put them on him. Also, put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get our fat calf and kill it so we can have a feast and celebrate. My son was dead, but now he is alive again! He was lost but now he is found!” (Luke 15:22–24).
Excerpted fromHow these words must have stunned the young man, “My son was dead …” He thought he’d lost his place in the home. After all, didn’t he abandon his father? Didn’t he waste his inheritance? The boy assumed he had forfeited his privilege to sonship. The father, however, doesn’t give up that easily. In his mind, his son is still a son. The child may have been out of the house, but he was never out of his father’s heart. He may have left the table, but he never left the family. Don’t miss the message here. You may be willing to stop being God’s child. But God is not willing to stop being your Father.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord.
“They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give
you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11 (New Living Translation)

I love this text of scripture and at the same time, I'm challenged by it. Most people just read it as, "God has good plans for me. Great!" For me, there's more to it than just what's written.

Here's what I read when I read this scripture:
"Follow me."   Yes, those words boil down to just 2 simple words when I read them. Why? It's simple. God has great plans for me and my life but I have to be following His plans to see those things come to pass. That's what gives me my "hope". My hope is found in surrender.

The short answer is "No". Many people and organizations are still working to help those in Haiti who have lost everything.

But as a nation, in our 9-5, Monday-Friday traditions, have we "moved on" and forgotten?

I know I haven't. I keep an ear to the ground and listen out for reports on what is happening in Haiti. I'm curious and concerned all at the same time. And just when I thought that the last survivor had been found and the search & rescue called off, I read this article from CNN.

Another life found. Another person saved. Amen.

If you were this man, what would you be thinking? You know, once the cloudiness clears and you understand what has happened. Would this be the moment that you finally believe there is a bigger meaning to life? Would this be the time that you turn your eyes to the sky and say, "thank you" and "what now?" Who or what would you credit your life to?

I happen to believe that everything happens and doesn't happen for a reason. I believe that there is a bigger plan for each and every person on this earth beyond punching the clock or changing out the laundry. This man's story is encouraging and inspiring on so many levels.

What do you think?

Most weeks, I like to share a devotional I've read on another website for my "House Blend" post. I think the devotionals I post have great insight into God's heart on different topics. Not to mention, they have a better way with words. ;)

Sometimes, though, a thought hits me and I just have to share it. This week is one of those weeks.

HE RESTORES MY SOUL

Psalm 23:3a "He refreshes and restores my life (my self)" (Amplified Bible)

As someone who's grown up in a Christian home, I'm very familiar with the 23rd Psalm. I've said it over and over again in children's church and even in my school. I'm sure that if you heard me recite it as a child, you would laugh at how robotic it sounded. No part of Psalm 23 meant anything to me whatsoever.

It's sad, but that's the truth. I think it may be common with memorization. Unless you make it mean something to you, it will end up being a long group of words said in the same sequence each time.

Well, after many years, I've finally found meaning in at least a part of this popular Psalm.

I recently reconnected with someone who I haven't spoken to in about 14 years. That's a long time, right?

After talking with him for about 15 minutes, he said "You have not changed a bit in 14 years." I quickly responded, "Many things are the same, but many things are different." Of course, there had been "change" in the 14 years between conversations. What he didn't know, though, was how much change had taken place.

In the 14-some years that went by, I changed from "Christian high school student" to the girl who was raped, the girl who was in an abusive relationship, the girl who attempted suicide, the girl who had no hope and found no love, the girl who loved to get drunk and high, the girl who met someone she wanted to spend the rest of her life with, the girl who cared for her fiance' as he fought cancer, the girl who was married, the girl who went back to church, and finally, the girl who became a mom of 2 beautiful children. My friend had missed a lot of what I went through.

Can you imagine how all of those events would change who I am? For a while there, my personality was a pure facade and I had no idea of who I was.

What's wonderful is that God knew me as "me" the whole time. What's amazing is that He brought me through the dark things and somehow put the pieces together to make me into the mom and wife I am. What's astounding is that someone who missed all of the "dirt" would say that I have not changed in 14 years.

The miracle is in God's grace. "He refreshes and restores my life (my self)". He made me new but He put me back on track to where I am the person I'm supposed to be. He "refreshed the page", put on his "throwback jersey", and polished off the grime. He restored me and someone who had no idea of what I had been through confirmed that for me.

Yes, I've changed in the 14 years between conversations. What hasn't changed is how God sees me. To Him, I was never "the girl who..."; I was and always will be His.

Today’s “brew” comes to us from Pastor Greg Laurie. (click the banner below to see his website full of devotionals.) I love this devotional and am happy to share it with you. :) Happy Sunday!

An Expected End

greg-laurie

Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.
—Philippians 1:6

One of my favorite verses is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” God spoke these words to the Jewish people during their captivity in Babylon. They were discouraged and wondering if they ever would be free to worship God as they once had. So God spoke to them, effectively saying, “I have a future for you.” That word “future” could be translated, “an expected end,” or “a ground of hope.”

Certainly we can apply this verse in principle to our own lives. God knows what we are going through right now, and He is thinking about us. Now if that verse simply said, “I know the single thought that I once had toward you,” I would be happy with that. Just knowing that the Almighty God, the Creator of the Universe, actually thought even for a moment about me would be enough.

But that is not what this verse says. Rather, God says, “I know the thoughts that I think. . . .” So God’s thoughts toward us are past, present, and future. How many thoughts would that be? Well, how high can you count? Psalm 40:5 says, “Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” His thoughts toward us are innumerable, and they are good.

You are a work in progress, and God is not done yet. There is going to be an outcome. There is going to be completion. And when life is a mess and you can’t sort it all out, God will pull it all together. He will work it all together for good.

1 Chronicles 16:34

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth forever.

**This Thanksgiving day, I have so much to be thankful for. This past year, we saw my son turn 2 years old, my husband reach 5 years of being cancer free, a beautiful baby girl born, friendships flourish, needs met, and more. I could go on and on, honestly. And for every good thing that comes my way, God gets the glory.

So, when I’m surrounded by family this year, I’ll be thanking God for every person I hug and speak to. For health, love, provision, joy, and peace; I’ll be counting my blessings all day long. There is, however, no way to think on and be thankful for each and every blessing in just one day.

I read a marquee in front of a church that I passed the other day. It read, “Turn Thanksgiving into ThanksLIVING”. It’s important to note even the smallest blessings every day and give thanks for them. We should live a thankful life rather than saving all of our thankfulness for one day a year.

What are you thankful for today?

This week’s verse is Psalm 103: 8 & 9

The Lord is compassionate and merciful,
slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.
He will not constantly accuse us,
      nor remain angry forever.

The common mistake we can make (even I make at times) when thinking about God is to humanize Him. Since He is someone or something that is far beyond our grasp of fully understanding, it’s easy to assume that He operates somewhat close to how we do.

Here’s what I love about the verse for this week; it clearly shows God in His true form. It’s comforting to know and understand that while I may not be “good enough” as a person, God doesn’t hold my mistakes over my head just waiting for His revenge. He never has and He never will.

Let’s break this verse down:

“The Lord is compassionate and merciful…”

Though I try to be this way, I always come up short. As an imperfect person, there is no way I can be considered to be “compassionate and merciful” all the time. It’s literally impossible.

Isn’t it wonderful to know that there is a God who IS compassionate and merciful every second of every day, no matter what? It’s quite unbelievable, yes, but it IS true.

“…slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love”

Here’s another truth that is hard to understand or even accept. God is PATIENT with us (slow to get angry) and His love NEVER fails. Now, if you’re anything like me, your love can and will fail. There are so many times that I have hurt someone and whether or not it was intentional, my love failed. God’s love will NEVER fail. He’ll never hurt my feelings or give up on me. He will ALWAYS love…that’s just amazing.

And patience? Don’t get me started on patience. There are days I have precious little patience for anyone or anything. There are days when it feels good to “snap” at someone else just because I’m in a bad mood. God is SLOOOOOOOOOOOW to get angry with me when I mess up over and over.  He doesn’t “snap” at me nor is He quick-tempered…and boy, do I deserve it sometimes.

“He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever.”

I’ve been guilty many, many times for jumping to conclusions about others. I see one action or hear one thing that they’ve said and I draw my own conclusions in my head as to what they really meant. How incredibly unfair of me. Still, it happens more often than I wish it did. God doesn’t react this way to me or you. He’s not up in heaven looking down just waiting to give us a “V8” for an unfair conclusion He’s made up based on our words or actions.

Finally, He does not “remain angry forever”. God doesn’t know how to hold a grudge or harbor resentment against us.  I’m not sure I’ll ever understand this but it’s great to know and store away in my heart. I struggle, personally, to fully let things go even if I’ve chosen to forgive someone who has hurt me.  There were even a few people who I’ve said “I will never forgive them” about.

Because God PURELY loves us, He doesn’t treat us like we treat each other. There is no reason for Him to get even when we mess up. He just wants to love us and help us through our hard times without losing his cool when we don’t get it right the first time.

In fact, He not only loves us but He forgives us if we sincerely ask Him to. Once He forgives us, He forgets our mistakes, and wants to help us to move on past our mistakes.

I’ve decided to share a scripture every week and some of my own, personal thoughts to go with it. I hope you enjoy it!

houseblend

Hebrews 11:1 (New Living Translation) says:

“Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually
happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.”

Faith is such an important thing to have as a person. If you don’t have faith in any one thing, what is your life’s purpose?

Hebrews 11:1 perfectly defines what the word “faith” means. For some people, faith is placed in individuals. Others spend their faith on the stock market or even their career.

Your faith and where it’s placed is what defines you as a person. So, take this week and ponder this…

Where do you place your faith?

I had to share this with you. I've had this song singing in my head all day long and went over to YouTube to find a video. While I was unable to find an "official" video for the song, the one I did find is pretty moving all on it's own.

Watch and enjoy. I hope you'll find yourself a little encouraged today. I know I was.
(p.s. the lyrics for the song are below so you can read along if you want.)

Lyrics to It Might Be Hope by Sara Groves:
You do your work the best that you can
you put one foot in front of the other
life comes in waves and makes it's demands
you hold on as well as your able

You've been here for a long long time

Hope has a way of turning it's face to you
just when you least expect it
you walk in a room
you look out a window
and something there leaves you breathless
you say to yourself
it's been a while since I felt this
but it feels like it might be hope

It's hard to recall what blew out the flame
it's been dark since you can remember
you talk it all through to find it a name
as days go on by without number

You've been here for a long long time

Hope has a way of turning it's face to you
just when you least expect it
you walk in a room
you look out a window
and something there leaves you breathless
you say to yourself
it's been a while since I felt this
but it feels like it might be hop
